Beginning: The Prologue

As with all movies, our adventure begins with a bit of backstory. 


My backstory is not particularly interesting. I grew up in a small, Midwestern town with a very conservative family. We had a routine of a family night every Friday, consisting of movies, pizza, popcorn, and soda (all of the things that were considered a treat in our household). Usually the movies were something that was family themed. I never watched anything rated PG-13 until my 13th birthday ("O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" for those who were wondering). I never watched anything rated R until my 18th birthday ("Zodiac" again, for those of you who were wondering). We never really watched anything that was considered a "must see" or a "classic". 


The original inspiration came from one such evening. We were watching Eddie Murphy's stunning classic, "The Haunted Mansion". Yes, *that* Haunted Mansion. I can't tell you exactly what went through my mind, but it was along the lines of


"... why are we watching such crap?"

Flash forward about 11 years later, and here we are. I'm 25, and I'm realizing that I have a lot of catching up to do. My husband (henceforth referred to as Hubbs) loves movies, and makes references that I consistently don't understand. Every time it happens, we say that we're going to get me caught up on movies. 

(Spoiler alert: we don't.)


This is going to be my new project. We are going to watch movies, and I'm going to write about experiencing these movies for the first time, what I think about the movie as a whole, and all of that jazz. 

Seriously, kids. This is going to be one heck of a ride, and I can't wait to share it with you all. With that being said, I am ALWAYS taking recommendations as to what movies I should put in my to-watch lineup.

Before we begin, I feel as if I need to say that my impressions and writings regarding this next movie were written before Blade Runner 2049 was announced. What Kind Of Dinosaur Did They Cook Up In That Lab?: Jurassic World

After watching the previous trilogy of Jurassic Park movies, this choice was obvious. Jurassic World , while brand-spankin'-new, was sure to just to be another portion to the Jurassic (Park/World/whatever) franchise. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. So as I alluded to, this is VERY heavily reliant on following the legacy of the original trilogy from the 1990's. The film begins with focusing on a family. The two sons are taken to an airport, board a plane, and are sent to visit their aunt. Their aunt happens to also be a high ranking employee at Jurassic World. Jurassic World, set on the same island as the original Park, is a slightly declining park. While beautiful, and obviously surpassing the original dream, park visitation numbers are declining. This is the catalyst for the decisions that lead to the rest of the movie. Candygram For Mongo: Blazing Saddles

Full disclosure: It was not conveyed to me that the next movie was satirical, comedic, or directed by Mel Brooks. With all of this in mind, my thoughts on the movie reflect this, and so does my post. Reader also beware: offensive material ahead. Proceed at your own discretion. The next episode in our adventure is the infamous  Blazing Saddles . Let's get started, shall we? The movie takes place in the old west, and begins with a scheming Attorney named Hedley Lamarr hiring thugs to force the residents out of their town to make way for a new railroad, killing their sheriff and trashing the town. The townspeople petition the governor (played by Mel Brooks) for a new sheriff. He obliges, and sends the all-white (all surnamed Johnson) citizens of Rock Ridge a former railroad worker who was on death row. Who also happens to be African-American (*gasp*).
